The Sweet Aroma of Worship

Writer's picture: Joey FernandezJoey Fernandez

In the tabernacle of Moses, incense was a vital part of the worship ritual. Its fragrant smoke, rising towards the heavens, symbolized the prayers and adoration of the people ascending to God. The sweet aroma of incense filled the air, creating an atmosphere of reverence and awe.

Just as the incense smoke ascended, so too do our prayers reach up to God. Our words, filled with gratitude, praise, and petition, rise like an offering to our Creator. When we pray, we are engaging in an act of worship, communing with the divine and seeking His presence in our lives.

The psalmist David beautifully captures this concept in Psalm 141:2: "Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!"

Here, David compares his prayer to the incense burned in the tabernacle. Just as the incense filled the holy place with its fragrance, so too does David's prayer fill his heart with the sweet aroma of devotion. The lifting of his hands symbolizes his act of worship, a gesture of surrender and submission to God.

In the same way that the incense was carefully prepared and offered according to specific instructions, so too should our prayers be approached with sincerity and reverence. We should take time to quiet our hearts and minds, to focus on God's presence, and to express our thoughts and emotions with authenticity.

Just as the incense smoke ascended towards the heavens, so too do our prayers reach the ears of God. He hears our cries for help, our expressions of gratitude, and our words of praise. He is attentive to our every need and desire, and He longs to commune with us through prayer.

As we light our own incense of prayer, let us remember the words of David: "Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!" May our prayers, like the sweet aroma of incense, ascend to God and draw us closer to His loving presence.
