Seeking Heavenly Wisdom

Writer's picture: Joey FernandezJoey Fernandez

Today's devotional passage is from James 3:13-15, which speaks to the nature of true wisdom. James begins by asking, "Who is wise and understanding among you?" (James 3:13). He is not simply asking for intellectual knowledge, but for a wisdom that is lived out in good conduct and meekness. This wisdom is not a product of our efforts but is a gift from God that comes down from above (James 3:15). In contrast to this heavenly wisdom, James describes an earthly, unspiritual, and demonic wisdom characterized by bitter jealousy and selfish ambition (James 3:14). This false wisdom often leads to boasting, lying, and divisions among believers. So how can we cultivate the true wisdom that comes from above? James gives us two clues:

  1. Seek God's wisdom in prayer. Ask God to open your eyes to His truth and to give you the strength to live it out in your daily life.

  2. Practice humility. True wisdom is not about being better than others but recognizing our need for God's grace. When we approach God with humility, He is more likely to pour out His wisdom upon us.

As we seek God's wisdom, let us pray that He would help us to:

  • Speak with grace and kindness. Our words have the power to build up or tear down. Let us use our tongues to encourage and uplift others.

  • Guard our hearts against bitterness and jealousy. These emotions can quickly poison our relationships and hinder our spiritual growth. Instead, let us choose to forgive and love our enemies.

  • Seek the peace that comes from God. True peace is not found in external circumstances but in a right relationship with God. Let us rest in His love and trust His plan for our lives.
