The Exaltation of Jesus: A Daily Devotional

Scripture: Philippians 2:9-11, Isaiah 45:23-25

Theme: The humility and exaltation of Jesus Christ.

Devotional:

Today, we reflect on the paradox of Jesus Christ: the exalted King who humbled himself to the point of death on a cross. In Philippians 2, Paul declares that God “has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name.” This means that Jesus, who willingly gave up his divine glory, has been raised to a position of supreme honor.

But how did Jesus achieve such exaltation? Not through power or might, but through humility and obedience. He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and became obedient even to the point of death on the cross (Philippians 2:6-8). This radical act of selflessness is the foundation of Jesus’ glory.

The prophet Isaiah echoes this sentiment in his prophecy. God declares, “To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.” This universal submission is not due to coercion, but to the irresistible love and sacrifice of Jesus. As Rashi explains, God’s righteousness lies in accepting all who return to him, drawn by the promise of his love.

Reflection:

  • How does the truth of Jesus’ exaltation affect your life? Does it inspire you to live with greater humility and obedience?

  • Think of areas in your life where you seek glory or honor for yourself. Can you surrender these desires to God and embrace the path of service?

  • Share your struggles and aspirations with a trusted friend or mentor. Receiving support and accountability can strengthen your commitment to living a Christ-like life.

Application:

  • This week, choose one way to serve others concretely. It could be volunteering your time, offering words of encouragement, or simply listening with compassion.

  • Look for opportunities to demonstrate humility in your interactions with others. Be willing to admit your mistakes, receive correction with grace, and put the needs of others before your own.

  • As a church community, pray for opportunities to serve those outside your walls. Let the love and humility of Christ be evident in your outreach and ministry.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the incredible humility of Jesus Christ. May we follow his example, emptying ourselves of pride and seeking to serve others with love. Grant us the strength to surrender our desire for glory and embrace the path of obedience. Grow in us hearts that are ready to serve, receive correction, and obey your will. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Additional Thoughts:

  • This devotional can be adapted for use in different settings, such as personal prayer time, small group Bible studies, or church worship services.

  • Encourage participants to share their own reflections and experiences related to the theme of humility and service.

  • Consider incorporating additional elements into the devotional, such as music, hymns, or poems that reinforce the message.

May this devotional inspire you to live a life that reflects the humility and love of Jesus Christ. Remember, true greatness is found not in seeking our own glory, but in serving others and giving glory to God.
