Scripture: Exodus 30:34-38

Devotional:

In today's passage from Exodus, God instructs Moses on how to prepare a special incense to be used in the Tabernacle and, the place of worship for the Israelites. This incense was not just any ordinary perfume; it was a sacred blend of spices that symbolized God's holiness and the purity of His presence.

The incense was made up of eleven ingredients: stacte, onycha, galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense. These ingredients were carefully selected for their fragrance and their symbolic meaning. Stacte, for example, was said to represent prayer, while onycha represented repentance. Galbanum was thought to symbolize protection, and sweet spices were associated with joy and celebration.

The incense was to be used in the tabernacle twice a day, morning and evening. As the incense burned, its fragrant smoke would fill the holy place, creating an atmosphere of reverence and awe. The Israelites would be reminded of God's holiness and their own need for purity as they approached Him in worship.

The incense also served as a reminder of God's promise to dwell with His people. When the Israelites entered the Tabernacle, they were entering into God's presence, and the incense was a tangible expression of His presence. It was a reminder that God was not a distant deity, but a loving Father who desired to be close to His children.

The incense also had a practical purpose. It helped to purify the air and reduce the risk of disease. The Tabernacle was located in the desert, and the climate was hot and dry. This made it difficult to keep the tabernacle clean, and the incense helped to mask any unpleasant odors.

The incense was a complex and multifaceted symbol of God's holiness, His presence, and His love for His people. It was a reminder that God is not just the creator of the universe, but also a personal God who desires to have a relationship with us.

Reflection:

  • What does the incense in Exodus 30 teach us about God's holiness?

  • How can we cultivate an atmosphere of holiness in our own lives?

  • What does it mean for God to dwell with us?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank you for your holiness and your presence in our lives. Help us to approach you with reverence and awe. May we always be mindful of your love for us and strive to live in a way that is worthy of you. Amen.
